And for a moment you feel the gap between their visible motion and your invisible one, and something in you contracts. Not quite envy. More like pressure. A comparison you did not ask to be making.

It shows up in sleep, or in the strange things that hold your attention — an image, a phrase, a thing you keep returning to without knowing why. Something in you is following a thread and has not told you where it leads yet.
