Before you learned that this kind of brightness attracted a certain kind of attention, or a certain kind of demand, or a certain kind of disappointment from people who wanted something from it you could not give.

Where You'll Recognise It

A tightness in the chest, just below the sternum — that is often where it lives. Not pain, more like a held breath. It shows up at the exact moment you are about to say the true thing and your body decides to abbreviate it instead.

You'll notice it when you are in a room where someone else is explaining something you understood ten minutes before they did, and you say nothing. Not because you are being generous. Because some part of you made a decision, a long time ago, that it was safer to appear less lit than you actually are.

Sometimes it arrives as restlessness with work that does not use the actual thing — the real capacity, the one you almost never show anyone at full strength. The restlessness feels like dissatisfaction but it is not. Dissatisfaction points outward, toward the situation. This points inward, toward something waiting to be used.

It also comes up when someone praises you and you immediately route the credit somewhere else. The habit is so fast you barely notice it. But if you sat with the moment just after — the moment before you deflected — there is something there that wanted to simply say yes. Yes, that was mine.

What It Is Not

The verdict they were half-braced to receive — you are a creative person, you are a natural leader, you are gifted — is not what this is, and you can set it down. That kind of sentence arrives with an assignment attached, a weight of expectation that has nothing to do with what is actually happening in you. The rune is not handing you a label.

It is not a forecast either. Nothing here says the breakthrough is imminent, or that the work is about to be recognized, or that this is a season of expansion. A rune drawn from a bag does not have access to your calendar.

What it is, is a picture of something real — a part of you that generates genuine light and has been managing that fact carefully, often by dimming it, sometimes by lending it to other people, occasionally by forgetting it entirely. The reason this picture stopped you is that you recognized something in it. That recognition is not nothing. It is exactly where you start.

How to Read It on Yourself

Do not study the rune. Let the part of you it is drawing forward take a shape.

Find somewhere quiet — it does not have to be ceremonial, a parked car is fine, a corner booth is fine — and let that part of you become visible in front of you. Some people see something like a flame in a particular form, contained and steady. Some people see a figure holding a light in a room they are not sure they are allowed to enter. Some people see something surprisingly tired. Whatever arrives, you do not correct it.

Then turn toward it and ask — out loud if you can, in writing if that is easier:

What have you been keeping this for?

Who taught you that this much light was dangerous?

What would you make, or say, or do, if I stopped managing you?

Take the first answer, not the composed one. The composed answer is designed to keep the conversation manageable. You are not trying to keep this conversation manageable. You are trying to find out what this part of you has been holding, in that room you rarely enter, with the door mostly closed.

You are not here to release it, fix it, or put it to work. You are here to find out what it knows. Often that is enough to change the next hour, and sometimes the next hour is everything.

The question to sit with: what did you make, once, that you knew was good — and what did you do with that knowledge instead of letting it stand?
