It just feels that way — because maggots hit you with instant, gut-level disgust before you can think a single thought. But in the language of dreams, that disgust is the whole point. The maggots are showing up in the discarded corner of you — the part you threw out, the part you were embarrassed to have around — and they've come back, wriggling and alive, to be dealt with properly. They are a lost member of your inner family, returning through the garbage.
What Maggots Actually Mean in Your Dream
Start with where maggots live. They don't appear in the clean, presentable rooms of a dream. They show up in the garbage — in the thing you had to "dispose of properly," in the pile you were ashamed to have created. That location is already telling you something. There is a realm inside every person that we could call the exiled realm — the part of your life you've written off, sent away, decided you don't want to look at. Maggots are what's living down there.

When a dreamer dreamed of maggots in her garbage and felt "very disgusted on a body level," embarrassed that she'd somehow caused the whole mess — the right response is to love it. Because that disgust is the feeling this dream sits on: the private, squirming certainty that something about you is unclean, that you made a mess you should be ashamed of, that if anyone saw the discarded pile you're carrying they'd be repulsed. Almost everyone carries some version of that and never says it out loud. The maggots are saying it for you.

Someone else picking the maggots off you is a fearful inner protector at work — often shaped like a parent — trying to clean you up so the neighbors won't talk. Ask what rule that helper is enforcing. It's usually something like you have to earn it, you can't just be happy, this isn't allowed — a morality that, when you press it, turns out to be built on fear rather than truth.
Maggots on food, or on something you were about to use point to a part of your life you thought was nourishing or usable that the dream is showing you has been quietly abandoned. Not ruined — returned. The question is what you stopped tending.
Maggots crawling out of a wound or your own body are the most tender version. This is not a message about your physical health. It's the exiled part of you emerging through the very place that hurt — the discarded thing using the old injury as its door back in.
A maggot dream that keeps returning is the surest sign of all that a lost family member is waiting for you. A recurring dream is a letter re-sent because the first ones were never opened. The exile knocks again and again, always at the garbage door, because that's the only door you left it. The repetition isn't a threat. It's patience.

Let the maggots answer in their own voice. They'll tell you exactly which exiled part of you they are — and it's almost never what you'd guess. What comes home through the trash is usually something you'll be relieved, and a little heartbroken, to see again.
So the one question to sit with: What part of yourself did you throw away as shameful — and what would change if you let it come back in through the front door instead?
