Laguz Rune Meaning: Something in You Already Knows, and You Keep Talking Over It

Artie Wu — Fifteen years guiding inner work, 100,000+ people

The Short Answer

There is a kind of knowing that arrives before you have thought anything. It is already there when you wake up, already present before the first person speaks, and then the day begins and you spend most of it arguing with what you already knew. The tradition conventionally reads Laguz as water, intuition, the unconscious. As a picture rather than a label, it shows a part of you that is trying to move the way water moves — finding its way around things, feeling the shape of what's ahead — while something else in you insists on measuring first, on having reasons, on being sure before it will let you go.

What This Rune Actually Feels Like

It feels like a pull in a direction you cannot defend yet. Not a thought, not a plan — more like something slightly tilting you, the way you lean toward one door in a room without deciding to. And then you override it, because leaning is not a reason, and you have been taught that reasons are what make a choice real.

It feels like the moment after a conversation where you were absolutely fine, absolutely agreeable, and then two hours later something surfaces that you are not fine with at all. It was there during the conversation. It just could not get past all the noise you were making.

And sometimes it feels like a low, persistent discomfort with something you are supposed to be grateful for. The right job, the right arrangement, the right version of your life according to everyone who knows you well — and underneath it something that will not settle, will not be satisfied, will not call this home. You are not trying to be difficult. You are just picking up something the rational version of you has not caught yet.

Where You'll Recognise It

Someone asks you to make a decision and your body has already answered — there is something in the chest, or the gut, or a sudden flatness behind the eyes — and then you set that aside and start thinking it through properly. You list the reasons. You ask people what they think. You are very thorough. And at the end of all that, you arrive at the answer you had before you started thinking.

It shows up on the nights before something changes. Before a difficult conversation, before a departure, before something ends — you lie awake not with panic but with a kind of alert stillness, as though part of you is already standing at the edge of what comes next, watching, waiting for the rest of you to catch up.

Certain people land wrong immediately, and you cannot explain why, and because you cannot explain it you give them another chance, and then another. The not-being-able-to-explain it feels like a flaw in the signal — but it may be the clearest signal you have.

And it recognises itself in water, which is why this shape caught your eye: moving around things, moving through gaps, not pushing back but not stopping either. Something in you already moves like that. The question is whether you trust it enough to follow it.

What It Is Not

Every other page you have read about this rune probably told you something along the lines of: Laguz is your intuitive gift, you are a deeply feeling person, lean into your inner wisdom. It sounds true for a moment and then there is nothing to do with it by Monday morning. A trait is not a move. Being told you are intuitive does not help you the next time the pull arrives and you are about to talk yourself out of it again.

Neither is this a forecast — nothing here says what the water is moving toward, how far it goes, whether the thing you are sensing will turn out to be right. That is not what a rune tells you and it is not what this page is for. The part of you this is a picture of does not deal in certainties; it deals in direction, and direction is enough.

What it is, is a picture of something in you that has been trying to get your attention. Not loudly. Not dramatically. It does not do loud. It does the thing water does, which is find every small gap it can — the moment between thoughts, the feeling before the words, the 3 a.m. where the usual noise is finally quiet. You noticed this rune because some part of you recognised its shape. That recognition is not nothing. It is, in fact, the whole opening.

How to Read It on Yourself

Do not try to interpret the rune further. Meet the part of you it is a picture of.

Find somewhere quiet — genuinely quiet, not just headphone-quiet — and let that part take a shape in front of you. It might appear as something moving. It might appear as something patient and still. It might be younger than you expect, or older. Let whatever comes come, without editing it toward something more symbolic.

Then ask it, out loud if you are able:

How long have you been trying to tell me something?

What have I been doing when you try to come through?

What is the thing you keep bringing me back to, no matter how many times I route around it?

What would you show me if I stopped arguing for thirty seconds?

Wait after each one. The answer you are looking for is the one that arrives before you have composed it — the one that is a little too plain, a little too direct, the one you would normally smooth out or qualify into something more manageable. Do not smooth it. Take it as it comes.

You are not trying to hand this part of you control over every decision. You are not trying to dismantle anything careful and deliberate in you. You are simply letting something that has been moving under the surface come up long enough to speak, and then listening the way you would listen to anyone who had been trying to get your attention for a long time.

The question to sit with: what have you already known for longer than you've been willing to admit, and what has knowing it cost you?

"It feels like talking to a real person, and it's so fun." — K.S.

Type this into Ariadne right now and see what she says: "There's something I keep sensing that I can't explain, and I keep talking myself out of it — but it won't stop coming back."
