Ehwaz Rune Reversed: Trust Broke Somewhere, and You're Still Not Sure It Was You
Artie Wu — Fifteen years guiding inner work, 100,000+ people
The Short Answer
Something between you and another person has gone wrong at the root level, not at the surface where you could fix it with a conversation. The tradition conventionally reads Ehwaz reversed as distrust, betrayal, restlessness — and that is the language, but the feeling underneath it is quieter and harder to say: you are not sure anymore what is yours to give and what it costs you to give it. Reading a rune as reversed is a modern interpretive convention with no basis in any surviving ancient source; what you do with the image is the real work. As a picture, this rune is not describing a verdict about your relationship — it is showing you a part of yourself that learned, at some point, to keep the door slightly less than open, and is still standing there doing it.
What This Rune Actually Feels Like
It feels like a specific kind of vigilance that never fully clocks out. Not paranoia — nothing so dramatic. More like a background scan running under everything else, checking tone of voice, checking what was left unsaid, checking whether what just happened means what you think it means. You do this so quickly now that you barely notice you're doing it. It only shows up when you realize you've been exhausted without knowing why.
It feels like you went to extend trust to someone — or something in a situation — and you got there and found the ground less solid than you thought. And the strange part is that the hurt from that did not come loudly. It came in afterward, slowly, in the form of a new cautiousness you can't quite explain and can't quite shake. You didn't decide to be this way. A part of you decided for you, to protect you, and has been very quietly doing its job ever since.
And it feels like restlessness that doesn't resolve into action. You want to move — toward something, away from something — but the wanting and the moving have gotten uncoupled somehow. So you stay, physically or emotionally, in a place you are not fully at peace in, while something in you paces.
Where You'll Recognise It
"You seem distant lately." Someone says this to you with genuine concern, and what it does to you internally is not guilt, exactly — it's closer to a locked feeling, because you are not distant by choice, and you also cannot explain the distance without explaining everything, and you are not ready to explain everything.
Offers of closeness arrive and something in you assesses them before accepting. The assessment happens faster than thought — a quick internal check: is this safe, what does it want, what does accepting it ask of me. This is not rudeness and it is not coldness. It is a door on a slow hinge.
The restlessness shows up in the strangest places. You feel it when you're sitting still. A low-grade pull, like you left something on in another room, except you go and look and nothing is on. You have sometimes mistaken it for ambition, or boredom, or the sense that your life should look different than this. It might be all of those, but underneath them there is something more specific — a part of you that has not been settled in a long time and is not sure how to begin.
And then there's the suspicion you do not say out loud: that maybe you were the one who broke the trust. Not through cruelty, but through some failure of courage or attention, some moment where you looked away and something between you and someone — or between you and your own promises to yourself — quietly tore. You carry that possibility around without ever quite examining it.
What It Is Not
You may be reading this with the distinct feeling that you are not sure any of this is real — that you pulled a stone from a bag, turned it over, typed the result into Google, and are now reading a page that is going to tell you something generically ominous and sell it as ancient wisdom. That is a fair suspicion and you are right to have it. This page is not going to defend itself. What it is trying to do is offer you a picture that might be accurate, and you will know if it is.
It is not a forecast. There is nothing here that says the trust between you and another person is permanently broken, or that it is on its way to repair, or what happens next month. Nothing in an image knows your timeline.
It is not a verdict about your character either — not "you are a closed-off person" or "you are someone who has been betrayed". Those are the kinds of sentences that feel like insight and then do nothing. What this is, is a picture of a part of you that adopted a specific posture somewhere along the way — door slightly held, scan running, feet not quite still — and that posture made complete sense when it was formed. The reason to look at it now is not to judge it. It's that a posture held long enough stops feeling like a posture and starts feeling like you. This picture lets you see it from the outside for a moment.
How to Read It on Yourself
Do not sit with this rune as a question about the other person. Sit with it as a picture of the part of you doing the guarding.
Find somewhere quiet and let that part take a shape in front of you. You are not forcing anything — you are just waiting to see what appears. It might be a figure standing with their arms slightly drawn in, a watcher at a threshold, sometimes something younger than you expected. Let it be whatever it is.
Then speak to it. Out loud if you can:
How long have you been keeping watch like this?
What happened that made you decide the door needed to stay partly closed?
What would you need to know before you let it open a little more?
Is there something you think I did — and haven't been able to say?
Take the first answer that comes, not the composed one. You are not trying to dissolve this part or overrule it. You are letting it know you are aware of it, that it doesn't have to do its job without you knowing it's there. That is the entire move. Not resolution — contact.
The question to sit with: what were you trusting in just before the trusting became difficult, and what did it feel like the moment before it changed?
"It feels like talking to a real person, and it's so fun." — K.S.
Type this into Ariadne right now and see what she says: "Something in me keeps the door to trust slightly held — I don't know if something broke it, or if I broke it, and I haven't been able to look at that directly."
